From Sofia to the mountains: how to travel easily to Bansko

Flying to Bansko (via Sofia Airport)

The nearest airport is Sofia Airport, approximately 160 km away.

From the airport, you can choose from various travel options; by car or bus is the fastest and easiest. The train is also an option and offers a unique ride on the narrow-gauge railway to Bansko, but with transfers, this takes about 8 hours.

The fastest way to reach Bansko is to fly to Sofia (SOF). This is often surprisingly affordable.
From London, Birmingham and Manchester, among others, there are several direct flights per week with British Airways, Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air or Ryanair.

  • Flights: from £30–£150 (low-cost to regular airlines)
  • Travel time: approx. 3 hours

These are your options for transport to Bansko:

  • Private transfer: €80–€120 per trip (2–2.5 hours' drive).
  • Train: A unique journey on the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway, but takes 8 hours with transfers.
  • Bus from Sofia Central Station to Bansko: Approximately €25.00 (3–3.5 hours' drive).
  • Airport transfer: An experienced driver will take you to your accommodation comfortably and safely.
  • Rental car: The most comfortable but most expensive option.

If you want to not only ski but also enjoy the surroundings, such as the Greek beach in Kavala, Melnik, Blagoevgrad and the famous Rila Monastery, we recommend a rental car. Slightly more expensive, but the most flexible and comfortable way to explore the area.

Based on our experience, we recommend a reliable provider: Top Rent A Car. They have been the best-rated car rental company in Bulgaria for many years.
They offer well-maintained cars, clear prices and unlimited kilometres. What's more, you can cross the border with their vehicles if you want to visit neighbouring countries.

If you choose an unknown car rental company, you may encounter problems afterwards with damage allegedly caused by you. This costs time and frustration before you board the plane. Therefore, always take photos of the car before you drive away from the rental company.
